Telling the Time

Telling the time is an essential life skill. By the end of Year 3, it is expected that all children should be able to tell the time to the nearest minute, using both digital and analogue clocks.  We understand that some children will pick this skill up quickly, where as others will take a lot longer to be able to do this. As well as telling the time, by the end of K.S.2., all children should be able to convert between different time measurements (for example converting hours to minutes and minutes to seconds) as well as be able to calculate durations of time and read time tables. 

 

Telling the time is one of those skills that is easily reinforced at home through regular practise and playing games. Here are some games that can help with these essential skills:

  • Telling the Time Read the time on an analogue clock. Lots of choice over levels, including: reading time to the nearest hour, half hour, quarter hour, five minutes or minute. Options include using a 24 hour clock and seeing how many correct answers you can get in a given time.
  • Find the Start Time Find the start time for a given time interval. Find the correct time on an analogue or digital clock. Lots of choice of level, including: subtracting 1 hour, multiples of 5, or 10 minutes or subtracting multiples of a quarter of an hour.
  • Adding Time Word Problems Read the time on either an analogue or digital clock and then answer a word problem involving adding a given time. Find the correct time on an anologue or digital clock. Lots of choice of level, including: adding 1 hour, multiples of 5, or 10 minutes or adding multiples of a quarter of an hour.
  • 24 Hour Time This activity helps you to tell the time using the 24 hour clock.
  • Time Solve the time problems in this game set in the future.
  • On Time - Advanced Set the hands of the clock to the digital times - be careful, it requires precision!
