Nurture @ Sharmans Cross

At Sharmans Cross, we firmly believe that children learn best when they feel safe, valued and supported. Creating a nurturing environment is at the heart of everything we do, as it helps our children to grow academically, socially and emotionally.

To strengthen this commitment, Sharmans Cross has chosen to become a Nurture UK school. By following the six principles of nurture, we ensure that care, understanding and positive relationships are woven into our daily school life. This approach enables every child to feel understood, develop confidence and resilience, and reach their full potential.

What are we doing?

Throughout this academic year, we have been working towards accreditation through Nurture UK’s National Nurturing Schools Programme. This recognition highlights our commitment to prioritising children’s wellbeing and the positive impact this has on their success as learners. It also forms the foundation of our universal approach to supporting the wellbeing of both children and staff throughout the school.

Nurture UK describes the nurturing approach to education as giving children the “social and emotional skills to do well at school and with peers, and develop their resilience and capacity to deal more confidently with issues they may face” (Nurture UK, 2023).

What does this mean for your child?

  •  Developing social and emotional skills lies at the heart of everything we do, shaping how we teach and interact with your children. We provide targeted support to help pupils with emotional regulation and literacy.
  • Through positive reinforcement and nurturing opportunities, we help children recognise, understand, and manage their emotions.
  • We actively listen to our pupils, gathering their views through surveys, class discussions, and School Council meetings.
  • Transitions between Infant/Secondary and between classes are carefully planned to ensure children feel supported and confident.
  • Children at Sharmans feel safe and are encouraged to grow in emotional awareness and literacy.
  • We recognise that every child learns and develops differently, and our curriculum and teaching approaches are designed to reflect this.
